Kawasaki was rebuilt after World War II and took advantage of the opportunity by including activities and attractions in Kawasaki that would serve and entertain international visitors. There are parks, races, tours of electronic corporations, competitions and festivals all year long. Here are only three fabulous attractions in Kawasaki that any European visitor will enjoy.

Oyama Road Walking Course and Museum
During the Samurai/Shogunate period, this path began at the Imperial Palace Gate crossing the Tama River through Kawasaki and well beyond into the villages of Japan. The trek will take several days but very enlightening and there are plenty of places to stop along the way. There are guide maps available in Kawasaki. However, if you carry a GPS smartphone, expect to use it in locating two of the hills on the map since they are hidden by modern sprawl. Before leaving Kawasaki heading for Mount Oyama, be sure to stop by the Municipal Oyama Road Historical Museum to learn about the folklore that accompanies your journey.

Ikuta Green Park
For those who love gardening or natural green spaces, this is the place to find specimens such as the Kunugi tree and Conola Oaks. During blooming times in spring and fall, the Rose Garden is open to the public with exhibits brought in by tradesmen in the early years of international encounters. Ikuta Green Park is so much more than a place to walk among greenery.

Municipal Science Museum for Youth
This museum works in cooperation with the Ikuta Green Park in the Tama Hills section of Kawasaki. The name can be slightly deceiving since it houses a fabulous planetarium with different celestial shows each month. There are science classes available for children only or for parents and children together that are hands-on experiments for all to enjoy. The do not need to be a child to enter this museum and to participate in the activities. There are new exhibits all the time, such as the fungi exhibit that recently took place.

Stopping at shrines for the evening while walking to Oyama or getting involved in a celestial show in the planetarium, these are only the beginning attractions in Kawasaki.

Kawasaki, Japan did not exist as a separate city until 1924. Until then, it was known as the point on the river where large ships could berth. During historical times under the Shogunate rule, two Samurai clans ruled the Kanagawa area. After the opening of trade with Japan, the port at Kawasaki, Japan became more important to the welfare of the nation.

From the merge of two cities and a village in 1924 that created the city, Kawasaki became one of Japan’s most industrialized and international cities. During World War II, Kawasaki was destroyed by constant bombings. As a result, the old parts of the city no longer exist. Today, Kawasaki leads the way in electronic technology and robotics.

Why Spend Time in Kawasaki?
In many Japanese cities, there are older sections and modern amenities. Because of its destruction, Kawasaki had no choice but to modernize its buildings, railways and electrical configurations. As such, Kawasaki is the most comfortable city in Japan for the western visitor. All the modern amenities desired by Europeans are available.

Because of the international automobile industries, electronic corporations, and universities in Kawasaki, most people speak English and many speak other languages as well. This makes it very easy to communicate with locals and learn about the history, art, music and culture of the inland cities. There are four major shopping and entertainment areas that offer goods from exotic places across the world.

Things You Can Only Do in Kawasaki, Japan
As the city’s population grew, the nation reclaimed land from the ocean floor to make way for the influx of the industrial complexes. The heaviest industrial zone is located on this reclaimed land. The city center specializes in tools and automobile assembly complexes. Many of these companies offer hands-on tours for visitors.

The Tama Hills is especially interesting to those who wish to learn more about the culture and history of Japan. This is primarily the residential and learning center of Japan housing several universities with libraries and museums.

Overlooking the Tama River, which separates Tokyo and Kawasaki, there are areas for picnics, barbeques and swimming. Some of the best fishing is done on the river and watching cliff divers is always fun.
